2024: Cyanotype chemicals on brass plates, Broken Garden Fence

“(...) The next work is Appendix II. This piece consists of a newly constructed pedestal made from a discarded, rusted fence found near Jukaia's residence and brass that supports it, along with brass coated with blueprints on the wall behind the fence. The images in the blueprints depict the surrounding environment where Joo Kaja is staying, featuring a landscape intertwined with rice plants that stretch upright in the spring and bow down in the autumn, along with the growth and wilting of lotus leaves. The images in the blueprints and the appearance of the installed structures intuitively reveal the passage of time. The juxtaposition of new and rusted structures, along with the growth and decay of plants, demonstrates the flow and cycles of time, emphasizing the continuity of changing life rather than fixed forms.

In contrast to traditional photography, which captures static moments and presents fixed images, Cyanotypes inherently suggest the flow of time and processes of change. In Joo Kaja ́s work, a light-sensitive material is applied to a brass plate, onto which objects are placed before being exposed to light to form images. This process visually captures the essence of materials and their transformations through interaction with nature. In this sense, these blueprints not only record subjects like traditional photographs but also reveal the flexibility and flow of images as manifestations of continuity and change. The cyanotypes emphasize the fluidity of time behind the fixed landscape images.(...)”
